Let’s talk fashion:

Wondering what to wear at the races?

The Kentucky Derby is perfect for showcasing spring fashions. Dress appropriately for the location and the weather. When going to a party or a track, remember you’re not going to a bar, theme park or even a Red Carpet premiere. Derby dressing brings out the southern charm in ladies and gentleman.

For the ladies:

You won’t want your heels too high, and your dress too short. Keeping classy is key at Churchill Downs. Ask your hostess if you are going to a viewing party. You would rather be overdressed than underdressed.

Fun or classic, anything goes.

It’s all about the headwear on Derby Day. Kentucky Derby attendees don’t exclusively wear hats anymore. Fascinators and hairpieces are seen more and more. This should be the first thing you pick out. You can embellish your own headpiece easily with a few accessories from your local craft store. Ribbons and flowers make a bold statement. Add roses for a classic “Run for the roses” look or use the colors your favorite horse will be wearing.

Plan to wear a simple dress so it doesn’t take away from your hat/fascinator. Spring colors are best.

If you’re going to a track, I suggest wearing wedge shoes, chunky heels, or flats for ease walking in the infield or near the paddock. You can always put flats in your bag and wear the heels for photos. There is a size limit for bags in Churchill Downs so check the security information before you head out for the day.

Layers, whether you’re inside or outside you may want to bring a sweater or light coat.To finish your look, accent with accessories like chunky jewelry or statement pieces. Keep your makeup fresh and let your hat be the focus.

For the Gentlemen:

Looking sharp!

Neckties – bow ties just scream dapper on Derby Day. Match your top pick horse or the people you are going with. Spend your day at the races in a suit. This is a great time to depart from the classic Navy/ Black /Gray and try a spring color!

Men wear hats too. Men’s hats are simple. A nice straw hat is always fashionable. This is the time to make a fashion statement, bring your personality into your fashion.

For ladies and gentlemen, your color combinations make for a confident look. Pick dynamic patterns or solids but stay true to your choice from head to toe. Look at jockey silks for inspiration.

Guests can see jockey silks hanging at Disney’s Saratoga Springs.

It’s going to be cold and wet Saturday in Louisville, KY but if you are going to the Derby, remember they don’t allow umbrellas.
