Cue the Music! Tony Awards Nominations and Our Opinions For Tonight’s Show

Groundhog Day Playbill. The show is up for a number of Tony Awards this year.

There’s nothing like seeing a musical on Broadway. The music, the costumes, the cramped seats piled high with your purse, coat, and Playbill.

I love Broadway and the next best thing to being there is watching it on TV. Broadway’s biggest night of the year is coming up – The Tony Awards! You can see it live from Radio City Music Hall tonight, Sunday, June 11, at 8 PM ET on CBS. I think it’s the most exciting award ceremony on TV. The Emcee for the night will be Tony Award and Oscar winner Kevin Spacey.

This year’s nominees will have you revisiting old friends, traveling to far away lands and singing at the top of your lungs! If you didn’t make it to the Great White Way, fear not. I have a list of the nominations and my thoughts on some of the shows.

In case you’ve not seen one or more in the Favorite Musical category, here’s a quick overview:

Come From Away:

Come From Away just opened in March. I haven’t seen it yet, but it’s on my list. This true story turned musical is about a small town in Newfoundland who hosted planes diverted from the USA after September 11th when US airspace is closed. Come From Away played record-breaking engagements in La Jolla and Canada. One song sings about getting to the farthest place to get to from Disneyland! Have you heard of it? It’s nominated for 7 Tony Awards.

Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812:

Josh Groban made his long-awaited Broadway debut in Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, Inspired by a 70-page part of War and Peace. This new musical is full of romance and passion as we see what happens to Natasha while she’s visiting Moscow and waiting for her fiancée to return from the war.The critically acclaimed score mixes rock, pop, soul, folk and electronic dance music with classic Broadway. The show has 12 Tony nominations!

The Great Comet had a sold-out run in Boston after the 2013 Off-Broadway premiere. Click here to watch a clip of the cast on GMA:

Dear Evan Hansen:

A lot of buzz is around this musical. Last year it was all about Hamilton, this year we are hearing a lot about Dear Evan Hansen. Do I think it will win? Maybe.

The musical opened on Broadway in December 2016, after its world premiere in Washington, DC, in July 2015 and an Off-Broadway production. Evan Hansen is a high school senior with a social anxiety disorder. Following a classmate’s death, Evan’s life is in turmoil. I wouldn’t want to be in high school again!  It’s nominated for nine awards!

Ben Platt is supposed to perform Sunday night but he is on vocal rest today so fingers crossed he will feel well enough.

Groundhog Day The Musical:

Ok, just a little humor. Chances are good that you saw the silly movie starring Bill Murray. This live show was the surprise of my latest New York trip. Andy Karl plays a weatherman on Groundhog Day who is trapped in a time warp and relives the day over and over again.

Was the musical like the film? Yes, but with added music and clever sets, this is a not to be missed show if you ask me. We loved it. To catch a clip of the cast performing on the Today Show, click here. This show is up for 7 Tony Awards.

I have enjoyed watching the Tony Awards most of my life. The shows are a favorite part of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade too. Growing up we used to go see shows and that tradition continues with my kids.

Tune into the Tony Awards tonight on CBS and see how my picks do. Broadway stars, show-tunes and surprises are in store.

Will you be watching the 2017 Tony Awards?  What shows are you rooting for?
