Ninjago fans have a lot to be excited about. You can find the Ninja within ya. Join Sensei Wu, Cole, Zane, Jay, Kai, Nya, and my favorite La- Lloyd, as they take to the big screen in The LEGO Ninjago Movie.
It’s a 3D computer-animated action-comedy martial arts film. Phew, that’s a mouthful.
The result is lush, colorful, and lit like a live-action movie. CGI animated bricks look like a stop motion film, but in contrast to The LEGO Movie and The LEGO Batman Movie, non-brick environments are used. The creative film-making team did an awesome job. The filmmakers crafted an action adventure with a homemade look and feel, like it has been hatched from a child’s imagination. The movie is made for the kid in all of us. The LEGO Ninjago Movie has its own style. A fusion of state-of-the-art- digital animation with elements of the organic world that producer Dan Lin calls “the next step in the evolution of the LEGO films.”
For some time now I have been doing just that. Putting LEGO minifigures out in the world and capturing them on my cell phone camera, so they can live beyond their temporary moment in the organic world. Grass, plants, flowing water, even a bamboo jungle, not to mention the realistically rendered, life-size cat.
Ummmm fooled me!
As the characters mix with this photorealistic world, you see how nature can mix with LEGO bricks. They also show different films as cameos. Charlie Bean, one of the film’s directors, said he is a longtime LEGO fan and he loves martial arts movies, robot and monster movies and this is a love letter to those genres seen through a unique LEGO lens. There are a lot of great themes in the movie. It opens in a pawnshop where a young boy visits with the owner, voiced by the legendary Jackie Chan. The boy tells the owner that kids bully him. The owner teaches the boy the story of Ninjago. He explains about a teenage boy named Lloyd who has a dad that is “The worst guy ever”, Lord Garmadon. Lord Garmadon frequently attacks Ninjago and tries to conquer Ninjago City. This makes everyone in Ninjago hate his son Lloyd Garmadon. Making the movie an epic tale of good and …dad!
Lloyd has spent his entire life in the shadow of his evil warlord father. He doesn’t let that stop him from doing the right thing. This Ninjago adventure calls to action young Master Builder Lloyd and his friends who are all secret ninja warriors led by Master Wu. Lloyd builds mech Ninja Vehicles which are used by the Ninja to counter the forces of evil. Lloyd and his friends use the super cool mech in the showdown, but they are tested because these modern-day ninjas are undisciplined. They have to look for inner…piece. (Get it, they are made out of LEGO pieces.) The secret Ninjago force defeats Garmadon and sends him back to his volcano lair. Was that the end of the movie? Garmadon vowed to return. Master Wu reminds the Ninja that they are supposed to be quiet and invisible, but they keep blowing everything up with their machines.
The young ninja go to the ship Destiny’s Bounty. They need to train to become true ninja and not rely on their mechs. Will they find their inner strength? I’m not spoiling it for you. This is also a story of the secret Ninjago force. In Ninjago City, the forces of good and evil are…related! How’s this for a family…we know that Ninjago City’s biggest enemy is Lord Garmadon, his son is Lloyd (who he calls La Loyd. The first L is supposed to be silent, like a ninja!), and his brother is Master Wu! Master Wu teaches his nephew the ways of the Ninja. Kai and Nya are brother and sister. I liked watching them interact and I love the relationship of Lloyd and his mom Koko, she is cool but even cooler than he knows.
Do you have a favorite Ninjago character? Watch for ‘Meowthra’ attacking Ninjago City. You could have a new favorite. Ninjago is the story of six young ninjas tasked with defending their island home, called Ninjago. By night, they’re gifted warriors, using their skill and an awesome fleet of vehicles to fight villains and monsters. By day, they’re ordinary teens, struggling against their greatest enemy: high school. The story concludes and, (Jackie Chan) tells the boy he will start his training tomorrow. The boy asks if they can bring the cat too, to which the owner responds no. Ninjago already has a strong fan base for these characters. Can you find the Ninja within ya? Do you want more Ninjago fun? Of course you do!
